Emonee
Brigid
Mikayla
+ a potential new Scout: DesJonique(apologies if I spelled it wrong- she said it so quickly...)
Activities Completed:
Girls began writing their play. I need to contact the church to be sure we can use the main room with the bigger stage, but we are hoping to perform the play and have our next Court of Awards July 12- the evening after our Overnighter at the Dell Diamond.
Ariana, Madison, and Alexis were not here tonight and DesJonique may or may not join, so we will finalize our plans at our July 5 meeting. Children need to provide their own costumes- Don't worry, it's nothing elaborate.
Here is a loose script:
Narrator (Mandy, or one of the additional Scouts): One day, some Girl Scouts were on a hike here in Austin, when they accidentally wandered off the trail.
Girl Scout #1 (Atalli): Look at those trees! Look at those flowers!
Girl Scout #2 (Desjonique): Look at those Bats!
Both: Aaaaaaaaaaaagh!
Girl Scout #1 (Atalli):
They'll give us diseases!
Girl Scout #2 (Desjonique):
They'll suck our blood!
Bat #1 (Mikayla):
We won't suck you're blood! We're not vampire bats. Vampire bats live in Latin America. They mainly like cattle and birds. And they don't actually suck the blood- they make a small cut and lap up the blood with their tongues. And they aren't so bad, considering an ingredient in their blood is used in the human world to help stroke victims.
Bat #2 (Brigid):
Yeah- We're Mexican Free Tail bats. We use echolocation to catch insects!
All Bats:
Yum!
Bat #2 (Brigid):
There has been plenty of rain this year so there are lots of insects for us to eat. That's why we wait until later to come out- there's so much food, we can sleep in! A single bat can eat nearly one thousand mosquitoes in one evening! We eat them so they don't eat you!
Girl Scout #2 (Desjonique) :
Wow! So you're not going to suck our blood.
Girl Scout #1 (Atalli):
What about diseases?
Bat #3 (Amri):
The worst disease bats are facing right now is White Nose Syndrome. It's a fungus that can develop on the faces of hibernating bats, causing them to wake mid-winter. Then the affected bats freeze or starve to death. Scientists are hopeful that we Mexican Free Tails won't get it because we tend to migrate, rather than hibernate.
Girl Scout #2 (Desjonique):
Oh, so we shouldn't be afraid of bats?Bat #4 (Emonee):
Well, to be safe, you should never, ever touch a bat that you find in the wild. You should always get an adult- and have them call a wildlife specialist. The bat could be orphaned or sick, and a scared bat might bite you. Girl Scout #1 (Atalli):
Is there anything else we should know about bats?
Bat #5 (Ariana):
There are more than a thousand kinds of bats- none of which are blind. Some bats eat blood, some eat bugs, some eat fish, mice and frogs. Bats that eat fruit and nectar help pollinate the rainforest.
Girl Scout #2 (Desjonique):
Wow- bats aren't scary at all!
Girl Scout #1 (Atalli):
No- bats are cool and helpful!
All Bats:
Thanks!
Bat #1 (Mikayla):
Well, It's kind of late and I'm hungry- let's go girls!
All Bats:
Woo Hoo! Bugs! Yum! Goodbye, Girl Scouts!(Bats Fly off stage. Girl Scouts wave and say goodbye.)
Girl Scout #2 (Desjonique):
Wow! That was really neat! Let's go tell the troop what we learned!
Girl Scout #1 (Atalli)
Yeah!
(Girls join arms and skip off stage.)

Everyone needs to bring their payments for the Dell Diamond Overnighter today. Do not pay for your Scout- her ticket and badge will be covered by the troop. Additional Over Night guests are $17, game-only tickets are $7 and extra badges are $1. Further information about this event is located at the bottom of our calendar page.
Girls that can remember what kind of tree we have growing outside will get a piece of candy at the meeting.
We will discuss troop shirts tonight- please share any ideas you might have. I will be ordering them soon.
There will not be a meeting for the next two weeks!
No meeting Monday June 21, No meeting Monday June 28
We will resume regular weekly meetings Monday July 5, at which we will finalize our bat play plans. The performance should be the meeting after that- but we need to make a plan. The Overnighter at the Dell Diamond is Sun July 11- Mon July 12. Do yall want to meet Monday July 12 to do the play? Please think on it and let me know.
