Bridging Requirements

There are 2 ways girls "graduate" to Juniors. Simply aging out and moving up is called Flying Up. This dates back to when there were only two levels of Girl Scouts, and is the only level at which there is a patch for just aging out of your program level. The patch is a set of wings.

Brownie Girl Scout Wings show that a girl has completed her years as a Brownie. She is ready to "fly up" to older levels of Girl Scouting. This is a tradition that goes back to when Brownie Girl Scout leaders were called Brown Owls.This patch will move up with your daughter to each uniform she wears from here on out.

At every level of Girl Scouting there are Bridging Requirements. These are as follows: A) meet with a troop currently in the level you are Bridging to- in our case a Junior Troop- and B) earn a badge from that level.

A Junior troop from Manor is meeting us Monday June 13 at REI. Participants: Atalli, Ariana, Amri, Faith, Syndy, Gabby, Emma, Naya

Requirement B: The Junior badge we are working on is called Your Outdoor Surroundings. It can be found on page 126 of the Junior Badge Book. We must do 6 of the listed activities. I plan for our troop to do more than 6 to make up for absenteeism. Here I will note my plan of attack and list girls who participated.

1) What would I need if... My plan: Monday June 13, Field Trip to REI. Learn about recreational outdoor equipment. Participants: Brigid, Atalli, Ariana, Amri, Faith, Syndy, Gabby, Emma, Naya

2) Pack it up My plan: Monday June 13, Field Trip to REI. Group discussion. Plan imaginary outdoor trips (hiking in mountains, camping in desert, trip to botanic garden, picnic in forest.) Discuss items needed for survival vs. items needed for comfort- based on what we learn in the store. Participants: Brigid, Atalli, Ariana, Amri, Faith, Syndy, Gabby, Emma, Naya

3) What does minimal impact mean? My plan: Learn about the Leave No Trace Program. http://www.lnt.org/programs/principles.php Meeting 6/20 Participants: Brigid, Amri, Atalli, Ariana, Emma, Gabby, Faith

4) To protect the environment My plan: Girls brainstormed ways to help the environment. Results: plant trees or a garden to filter the air. Native Texas Nursery will be donating some trees. We will do the actual planting after we Bridge. Participants: Amri, Ariana, Emma, Naya, Gabby, Faith, Emonee

5) An outdoor hobby My plan: Visit with an adult who has an outdoor hobby. Learn some basics.  Field Trip  Saturday June 18- learn about fishing. (Or learn about an outdoor hobby on your own with a trusted adult.) Participants: Emma, Naya, Ariana, Amri, Faith

6) Classifying outdoor objects My plan: Monday June 6, Meeting. Learn to describe outdoor objects. Participants: Amri, Ariana, Emma, Naya, Gabby, Faith, Atalli

7) An outdoor career My plan:  We met a volunteer at McKinney Falls. At the 6/20 meeting, talk about outdoor careers.  Participants: Faith

8) What do you see? My plan: Monday June 6, Meeting. Using the skills we learn from Activity #6, pair up for an art activity. Participants: Amri, Ariana, Emma, Naya, Gabby, Faith, Atalli

9) Take a nature hike! Go hiking with a trusted adult. Participants: Emma, Naya, Ariana, Amri, Faith

10) Outdoor Fun and Games My plan: Play outdoor games at Monday June 20 meeting. Everyone bring water! Participants:Amri, Ariana, Atalli, Emma, Gabby, Faith

 Bridging Handouts went out June 6. Be on the look out. It  includes what you need to buy for the Bridging Ceremony (her new uniform.) Here is the link for proper placement of insignia on the Junior uniform. Please have uniform with all insignia properly attached and ready to go when you arrive at the Bridging Ceremony.
