Everyone in our group should be in costume. The theme choices for your costume this year are: Mexican Free-Tailed Bats, Catrinas, Frida Kahlo, Emiliano Zapata, Mariachis, Pancho Villa, Pre-Columbian/Colonial/Modern Mexican costumes, and skeletons (of course!) Follow the links for inspiration.
With Mexican Free-Tails being the resident bats of the Congress Street Bridge, and bats being a Pre-Hispanic symbol of death, the underworld, and funerary rituals, the Mexic-Arte Museum is hoping to have over 100 bat costumes featured in this year's parade.
IDEAS FOR PARTICIPATION:
The following are some ideas you can use to artistically express yourself in a traditional or contemporary way!
- Costumes representing one of the above time periods, paper-mâché props, mojigangas (giant puppets), and cabezudos (big heads)
- Music groups, noisemakers, dancers
- Decorated floats, bicycles, and cars
- Tributes to loved ones, saints, or spiritual deities
- Tributes to famous celebrities who have passed on (musicians, artists, actors, politicians, etc.)
- Tributes to historical figures of the Mexican Independence or Revolution
